Solid academic performance in college preparatory coursework is a primary concern in reviewing a freshman applicant’s file. The mission of Saint Louis University’s Department of Philosophy is to provide a philosophical education appropriate to the Catholic and Jesuit education goals. This goal is rooted in the fundamental Catholic belief that all human experience reveals and speaks to the existence and nature of God and the dignity and value of all human beings in themselves and as members of the human community. The department seeks to continue the Catholic tradition of engaging philosophically with contemporary culture, both to learn from it and to share with it the intellectual heritage Catholicism treasures. The department serves this tradition through philosophical research from a range of perspectives, Catholic and non-Catholic.

The department is also home to the journal Res Philosophica, one of the oldest philosophy journals in the United States. Saint Louis University offers a minor in philosophy that can be completed in 18 credits. Students not pursuing ordination have greater latitude in the selection of philosophy courses.

A foundation of key thinkers, from Plato to the present day, is coupled with a commitment to interdisciplinary thought and openness to cutting-edge modes of inquiry. In addition, students in this program will be able to learn how to construct and present logical arguments, as well as to develop detailed and coherent research papers that may address existing societal problems. While enrolled in the College of Philosophy and Letters, students may begin graduate coursework toward an M.A. In their last year of studies, students officially transfer into the graduate program, which is housed in the College of Arts and Sciences. §General electives may be satisfied by up to two additional philosophy courses and two additional theology courses, or by courses in other disciplines that are relevant to the student’s capstone or ministry. In addition to the required graduate courses, the roadmap below includes undergraduate prerequisites for a student without previous background in philosophy.

Philosophy students must complete a minimum total of 30 creditsfor the major. To be considered for admission to any Saint Louis University undergraduate program, applicants must be graduating from an accredited high school, have an acceptable HiSET exam score or take the General Education Development test. All applications are thoroughly reviewed with the highest degree of individual care and consideration to all credentials that are submitted.

Have at least a 2.00 cumulative average, a 2.00 average in the major and a 2.00 average in the minor or related elective hours.
