Hitting a knuckleball is different enough from other aspects of baseball that players specifically prepare for the pitch during batting practice before games they expect it in. According to physicist Robert Adair, due to the physiological limitation of human reaction time, a breaking knuckleball may be impossible to hit except by luck. If a knuckleball does not change direction in mid-flight, however, then it is easy to hit due to its lack of speed. To reduce the chances of having the knuckleball get hit for a home run, some pitchers will impart a slight topspin so that if no force causes the ball to dance, it will move downward in flight. Another drawback is that runners on base can usually advance more easily than if a conventional pitcher is on the mound.
With the knuckleball, though, you want the exact opposite, as you don’t want the ball to spin at all — or as little as possible. Also don’t change the slot of your arm or any other part of your windup or release. This consistent motion is the first step in causing deception with batters, and keeping them off guard in the process.
In volleyball, the float serve involves hitting the volleyball in such a way to minimize the rotation of the ball, causing unpredictability in the ball’s movement. When done correctly, the float serve is hard for opponents to predict where the ball will end up, thus rendering it hard to pass. Among position players making pitching appearances, those who have utilized the knuckleball include Wade Boggs,Danny Worth, Alex Blandino, and Ernie Clement.
So, because of the risk, pitchers rarely throw the pitch anymore. It is called a knuckleball pitch because of how the pitcher grips the ball. To throw a proper knuckleball, the pitcher must have their small knuckles towards the tips of their fingers, pressing down on the ball as it is gripped.
It doesn’t require any twisting of the wrist or arm, which in turn puts no extra pressure on a pitcher’s elbow, shoulder or other parts of the arm. It also looks odd coming out of a pitcher’s hand because it doesn’t spin at all. That’s why despite it being so deceptive, there aren’t too many pitchers who throw it pop toss with regularity. If you believe adding velocity could be critical to your success, check out my proven programs for pitchers of all ages. The thing I learned right away is it’s more important to be in the right position. It’s the constant struggle for perfection with the realization that you’ll never achieve it.
Safety-wise, your kid can learn this pitch as young as you want to teach it. Skill-wise, good luck; the knuckleball is so difficult to control, there are rarely more than a few pros in the whole league with the cajones to pitch it. The most iconic knuckleball pitcher of the 21st century retired in 2012 after 19 seasons and 200 wins, and Tim Wakefield will forever be a Red Sox fan favorite for good reasons.
A knuckleball pitch is an off-speed pitch thrown with the pitcher’s knuckles pressing down on the ball as it is released. The purpose of pressing the knuckles down on the ball is to eliminate as much spin on it as possible, allowing gravity and other wind factors to influence the ball and increase the difficulty of hitting it. The object here is to cancel out the natural backspin of the ball as it rolls off the finger. The way to do this is to extend those two fingers, or ‘flick’ them forwards as you release the ball. This will in effect, try to spin the ball forwards as the release tries to spin it backwards. The knuckleball is one of the hardest, if not the hardest, pitches to throw in baseball.
“I think this type of pitch is cool and fun to throw, but a little hard to learn. I can’t wait to use it in a game.” Keep your thumb off to the side of the ball, slightly underneath it. This is your only stability point so you may need to grip harder to control the ball. Fell victim to three passed balls in a single inning, with another ball that got away being recorded as a wild pitch. Of the Chicago White Sox are the only knucklers in the big leagues. “Catcher turned third baseman turned knuckleballer … In one day”.
However, young pitchers with smaller hands tend to throw the knuckleball with their knuckles. Sometimes young players will throw the knuckleball with their knuckles flat against the ball, giving it less spin but also making it difficult to throw any significant distance. The Knuckleball is a great pitch to throw with the Blitzball because of the crazy movement it produces. Grip the ball with the tips of your index and middle fingers on top of the ball and your thumb and ring finger supporting the ball on the bottom. As you release the ball, you want to “push” the ball straight out with your fingers so that there is absolutely no spin on the ball . The perfectly thrown knuckler has absolutely zero spin as it flutters and dances its way to the plate.
When it comes to throwing a knuckleball in its true form, you’re going to have to work on your arm angling and movement. Here are a couple of arm movements you need to take a look at. The thumb and the pinky finger will provide stability to the three-knuckle grip. This grip may feel somewhat less stable than the two-knuckle grip, but you’ll be able to pitch the ball farther and quicker which will ultimately be advantageous.
